Project Kaprije

The island of Kaprije is situated in the central part of the Sibenik archipelago. Located about 15 kilometers southwest of Sibenik, it is 7.11 km2 and the total length of the coast is 25.211 km. The only settlement on the island is also called Kaprije, which surrounds the hills, the largest of which is Velika Glavica (129 m). It is named after the Mediterranean capar plant, whose buds serve as a spice. Northeast are Prvić, Tijat and Zmajan with smaller islets, of which the Kapriški Channel is divided, and the southwestern is the island of Žirje with its islets divided by the Žirjanski kanal.
The island was in the 14th century owned by the Ljubić family, and from 1500 it belonged to the Šibenik noble family Divić (Difnico). The first settlement in Kaprije started in the 15th century, and in the 16th century even more because of the Turks' invasion, so people from the mainland sought refuge on the islands. At that time Kaprije was important for lime. For example, in the fifteenth century, forty-five lime modifiers were produced for the construction of the Siberian lazaret on Capri. In the village there is the church of St. Petra was built at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, extended in 1801.
Kaprije during The Second World War was occupied by the fascists. Their base was located on the neighboring island of Kakan in Tratica bay, where buildings, bunkers, excavations etc. are still today. Today, the central square is a monument to all the ferocious fighters. On March 22, 1944, near the northern tip of the Capri, the German military ship Francesca da Rimini was inhale. It was anchored at least fifty feet from the shore, the ship was anchored due to motor failure, and was masked by a sling. That day, probably on the alert of Partizan with Žirje, was submerged. Today, the boat lies at a depth of 55 meters and is an attractive diving site.
Kaprije during the Homeland War did not suffer any damage or destruction, but its inhabitants helped Zirjan. They carried the grenades on the island of Zirje, which was later formed by a capyr's cannon and helped fired on 18 September 1991. Which were caused by the rocket of Zirje village.
The island is not networked in the regional water supply system of the Šibenik-Knin County, or the North Dalmatian water supply system. Water is provided by collecting rainwater in its own waterfalls (gusterns), ie in the dry season by submitting watercraft.
